New media artists, Rachel Peachey and Paul Mosig – also known as The Contextual Villains – undertook a 2006 Synapse Residency with the Department of Archaeology and Natural History at the Australian National University, Canberra. ANAT supported the residency in association with the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian government’s arts funding and advisory body.

Rachel and Paul spent twelve weeks living and working at the ANU developing a body of work, Filtering Remnants. The project drew particularly on the meticulous gathering and documenting of samples by the department and on the consequent story telling that makes the study of interactions between humans and their environment so compelling. This blog provides a record of their residency.
