The Synapse Residencies place Australian artists into science and research settings to pursue collaborative projects with benefits accruing to both the resident and the host organisation.

In its first year of operation (2004/05), ANAT called for expressions of interest from science organisations within Australia interested in hosting an artist for a three-month period. The call then went out for artists to apply to be resident within the selected host organisations. Four residencies were supported:

David O'Donovan - at the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, Swinburne University (VIC)

Julie Ryder - at the Australian National Botanic Gardens & the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research (ACT)

Annemarie Kohn at the School of Computer and Information Science, University of South Australia (SA)

Peter Charuk - at the South East Sustainable Marine Ecosystems, CSIRO (TAS)

Delivered in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts
