Artist Baden Pailthorpe, focused on the relationship between technology, power and culture, in his 2017 ANAT Synapse Artist Residency with UTS Sport and Exercise Science Professor Aaron Coutts. Drawing on his expertise in atmospheres and spacial media theory, and its application in artistic practice, Baden worked alongside Aaron and his research team to develop a method for quantifying the influence of crowd behaviour on AFL and NFL player performance.

As part of the ANAT Synapse program, residents create online creative research journals, these serve as unique live documents of the residency and as a cultural artefact.

Clanger, a solo exhibition at UTS Art, Sydney resulting from the residency, explores the aesthetics of power through data, bodies and technology. In an environment that is both physical and virtual, Clanger pairs the statistical tracking of AFL player performance with the emotional intensities of the crowd.
